Winter photo shoot in Prague: tips

Winter photo shoot in Prague: tips

Winter photo shoots can look absolutely magical – snowflakes falling, cozy clothes, and glowing city lights. But behind those beautiful images is careful preparation. As a portrait photographer in Prague, I’ve done many winter sessions and learned what truly helps clients feel comfortable and look great, even in freezing temperatures.

Whether you’re planning a couple session, solo portraits, or family photos in winter, these tips will help you feel prepared and enjoy the experience.

1. Dress Smart and Stay Warm

Cold weather can affect how you feel and how you look in photos. Shivering, tense shoulders, or a red nose can all show up in the pictures. The right clothing helps you stay warm and relaxed.

Here’s what I recommend:

  • Layer up: Start with thermal wear, then add sweaters, coats, scarves, and warm socks.
  • Choose cozy and photogenic pieces: Think of woolen textures, soft knits, oversized coats – they photograph beautifully.
  • Don’t forget accessories: Gloves, hats, and even umbrellas add charm and protect you from the wind.
  • Bring heat pads: You can slip them into your gloves or boots.

2. Plan the Flow of the Session

I always structure winter sessions carefully to balance time outdoors and indoors:

  • We start outside when everyone’s full of energy and the makeup/hair is still fresh.
  • After the outdoor part for longer photoshoots, we usually move to a café or indoor location for cozy portraits with hot drinks.
  • I also suggest breaks with tea or coffee to warm up.
  • We stay in motion – I’ll guide you with poses that keep your body moving and help avoid stiffness.

3. What to Bring With You

To stay comfortable and make the most of your shoot:

  • Thermos with tea or coffee
  • Spare gloves or hand warmers
  • Tissue for your nose or eyes (especially in the wind!)
  • Comfortable shoes (bring heels or fancy shoes in a bag if you want them in the photos)

4. Behind the Scenes: How I Prepare

You’re not the only one getting ready for the cold! As a photographer, I wear several layers and bring extra warmers too. I stretch between locations, keep moving, and always finish the session with a hot drink myself 😊

If it’s very cold, I sometimes even carry rechargeable hand warmers in my coat pockets – small things like this make a big difference during winter sessions!

5. Bonus Tips for a Magical Look

  • Snow looks beautiful, but if it’s cloudy or rainy, don’t worry – Prague still offers dreamy backgrounds with its pastel buildings and old town charm.
  • If you’re unsure what to wear, I’m happy to help you choose an outfit in advance – many clients send me photos of their clothes, and I help them combine them into a stylish and warm look.
